Mentoring for Agriculture Educators
--Mentoring Main Page--

What can I do to help mentor an entry level teacher?

Dr. Joerger's site offers a lot of research on ways those who are in different positions throughout agriculture education can help support entry level teachers. Visit his website for the complete research. Documents cover ways mentors, state staff, teacher educators, and other agriculture teachers can help support entry-level teachers. The research is divided into two types of support: psychosical and professional. Here are ten suggestions from the "What Mentors can Do" research:

  1. Offer to meet a first-year teacher at summer events like the NAAE state affiliate meetings, etc.
  2. Contact a first-year teacher during his or her first week to offer support
  3. Talk about ways to become aquainted with community leaders, and help make introductions if you know any in that teacher's community
  4. Send reminders of key FFA events that are coming up
  5. Encourage them to attend professional development workshops
  6. Introduce them to the state supervisor, NAAE affiliate officers, FFA executive secretary, university staff and area ag teachers
  7. Work to convey feelings of respect
  8. Share personal experiences
  9. Encourage them to spend time with their families and themselves
  10. Show acceptance of the first-year teacher as being a competent colleague
