Sulser to serve as the President of the National Council for Agricultural Education

Allan Sulser, current president of the National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE), has been elected as president of The National Council for Agricultural Education (The Council).

Beginning in January 2007, Sulser will be leading The Council as it works toward its mission of providing leadership and coordination to shape the future of school-based agricultural education. Some of The Council’s key initiatives are:

• 10 x 15 Initiative – The Council has adopted a goal of having 10,000 quality agricultural education programs by 2015.
• Development of national program standards for agricultural education
• Development of national curriculum standards for agricultural education.
• Providing an annual report on school-based agricultural education in the United States.

Sulser was elected to his post by the current Council members, who are leaders of entities that represent students, teachers, teacher educators, state leaders, alumni, industry, and government. This group includes representatives from NAAE, the Agricultural Education Division of the Association for Career and Technical Education, the National Center for Agriscience and Technology Education, the American Association for Agricultural Education, the National Association of Supervisors of Agricultural Education, the National FFA Alumni Association, the National FFA Foundation, Inc., the National FFA Organization, the National Farm and Ranch Business Management Education Association, the National Postsecondary Agricultural Student Organization, and the National Young Farmer Educational Association.

Sulser has been an agriculture education instructor for 26 years, and has spent the past 24 of them teaching at Wasatch High School in Heber City, Utah. Sulser attained a B.S. in Agricultural Education from Utah State University and an M.S. in Counseling from the University of Phoenix.

Sulser’s appointment adds another entry to his growing list of leadership roles in agricultural education. In addition to his five years of service on the NAAE board of directors, including his term as 2005-06 NAAE president, he has also served as both president and treasurer of the Utah Association of Agricultural Educators. Sulser has received the Outstanding Teacher and Outstanding Program Awards from both the Utah Association of Agricultural Educators and the Utah Association for Career and Technical Education, and the NAAE Teacher of Teachers Award.

NAAE seeks to advance agricultural education and promote the professional interests and growth of agriculture teachers, as well as recruit and prepare students who have a desire to teach agriculture. The organization is dedicated to developing professional pride, to nourishing a spirit of unity among classroom teachers and to recognizing members for conducting outstanding programs. It monitors governmental affairs affecting agricultural education and assists in the development of priorities and strategies to effect federal legislation and appropriations.
