Focus Groups on Agriculture Teacher Recruitment

Participant Form
Consent Form

As part of the work of the 10x15 Teacher Recruitment task force activities, at the upcoming National FFA Convention, we are conducting focus groups of high school students who are planning to attend a college or university and major in agricultural education with the intention of becoming an agriculture teacher.  We need your help to: 1) identify your students who plan to become agriculture teachers; and 2) schedule them to participate in one of our focus groups.

The focus group sessions will take place on Friday, October 24, 2008, in Room 115 of the Indianapolis Convention Center.  We will conduct three 90-minute focus group sessions beginning at 8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 1:30 p.m.  We need your students, who are future agriculture teachers, to agree to participate in one of these three sessions.

The focus group sessions will consist of a series of questions designed to discover factors that influence students’ decisions, and barriers to students’ decisions, to become agriculture teachers.  The sessions will be audio-taped and/or video-taped.  Students’ names and responses will be kept confidential.

As the student’s agriculture teacher, it will be your task to get the student to the focus group session on time and to reconnect with him/her after the focus group session.  Each student participant who is under the age of 18 must complete the consent form, which requires the signature of a parent or guardian.

If you have a student you think would be a good participant in this study, and if your student is available to participate in one of these focus group sessions, please download the participant form and return it via fax or e-mail to Linda Berry in the NAAE office.  The NAAE fax number is (859) 323-3919 and the e-mail address is LBerry@uky.edu.

You may direct questions to Jay Jackman, at JJackman.NAAE@uky.edu.

Dr. Ann Benson
Dr. Ann Benson's Presentation at the 2004 NAAE Convention

Many of you heard Dr. Ann Benson speak at the 2004 NAAE Convention. Dr. Benson's presentation was quite thought provoking for the future of agricultural education. Dr. Benson also presented to the National Council of Agricultural Education earlier in 2004. Her message is quite clear ... agricultural education must take a serious look within to determine how we can best deliver our education programs to accomplish our goals of career preparation and academic success through classroom/laboratory instruction, work-based learning (via SAE), and leadership development (via FFA). View PowerPoint presentation. View Dr. Benson's biographical sketch.

U. S. Department of Agriculture
USDA Employment Opportunities Forecast 2005-2010 Study

Employment opportunities for U.S. College graduates with expertise in the food, agricultural, and natural resources system are expected to remain strong during the next five years according to the sixth five-year employment opportunities projections study initiated by CSREES. The latest study covers the years 2005 through 2010 and is conducted as a result of Congressional action taken in 1977 when Congress designated the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) as the lead federal agency for higher education in the food and agricultural sciences. The Congress identified graduates in the fields of science and business as those with baccalaureate or higher degrees in agriculture, natural resources, veterinary medicine, or closely allied specializations. This study examines those graduates who qualify for and generally enter scientific and professional occupations This year’s study identifies 52,000 annual job openings for new graduates during 2005-2010, and some 49,300 qualified graduates available each year for these positions. View study findings.
