Vision Statement: The plant business has changed in many ways since 1940 when our product was almost exclusively field grown vegetable plants. The product mix began to change in the early 70's as customer demand for greenhouse potted plants grew. To meet this shift in demand from bare-root to container plants, we began constructing greenhouses. Alabama Farmers Cooperative bought Bonnie Plant Farm in 1975. The family members stayed on to continue operating the company. Business grew rapidly through the 80's as we added trucks and greenhouses to service an expanding market area. In 1983, we delivered plants into 13 states. As mass market retailers began to expand into the home garden trade by opening garden centers, we saw an opportunity to increase sales at an even greater pace. To prepare for this new market, we increased our distribution stations in other states. We hired more salesmen, constructed more greenhouses, and generally geared our operation for what was to be tremendous growth in the 1990's. In 2007, our business has grown to 45 growing stations and
a sales force of over 400. We deliver vegetable and herb plants
to over 11,000 accounts in 49 states. These accounts include
Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowes, chain and independent stores. Homepage: www.bonnieplants.com |

USDA Risk Management Agency The USDA, Risk Management Agency (RMA) was created in 1996 to operate and manage the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation (FCIC). The FCIC was founded in 1938. RMA, via the FCIC provides crop insurance to American producers. Federal crop insurance protects farmers against production or revenue losses. What perils are covered? Natural disasters, drought, excess water, freeze, hail, plant disease, wind, flood, insects and loss of revenue. What is not covered? Poor Management and poor farming practices, chemical drift, negligence, wrongdoing. Why is the U.S. Government involved? In case there are large, widespread, catastrophic losses due to broad perils. Crop insurance coverage is offered in all states. This involvement makes crop insurance premiums affordable with federal subsidies. Private insurance companies have Standard Reinsurance Agreements with RMA. The companies provide agents that sell the crop insurance to producers. The companies manage loss adjusters and pay all claims and assume risk to balance the claims authority. The RMA, Risk Management Education (RME) Division works with public and private partners to train farmers and ranchers in using risk management tools and strategies. RME supports the mission of delivering Federal crop insurance, through providing farmers with information and educational opportunities to learn more about risk, the tools available to manage risk, and the process of making sound risk management decisions. Risk management strategies must fit each producer’s circumstances, the current business environment, and must integrate production, marketing, financial, legal and human risk. The objective of risk management is not to eliminate risk. Risk management is taking the right risks to maximize profit while reducing income variability and meeting financial obligations. RMA awards partnership agreements that will support the development of new risk management tools; outreach opportunities…to small and limited resource farmers and ranchers; risk management education; and crop insurance education in 15 Targeted States.
