Vision Statement: The plant business has changed in many ways since 1940 when our product was almost exclusively field grown vegetable plants. The product mix began to change in the early 70's as customer demand for greenhouse potted plants grew. To meet this shift in demand from bare-root to container plants, we began constructing greenhouses. Alabama Farmers Cooperative bought Bonnie Plant Farm in 1975. The family members stayed on to continue operating the company. Business grew rapidly through the 80's as we added trucks and greenhouses to service an expanding market area. In 1983, we delivered plants into 13 states. As mass market retailers began to expand into the home garden trade by opening garden centers, we saw an opportunity to increase sales at an even greater pace. To prepare for this new market, we increased our distribution stations in other states. We hired more salesmen, constructed more greenhouses, and generally geared our operation for what was to be tremendous growth in the 1990's. In 2007, our business has grown to 45 growing stations and
a sales force of over 400. We deliver vegetable and herb plants
to over 11,000 accounts in 49 states. These accounts include
Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowes, chain and independent stores. Homepage: www.bonnieplants.com |

Several professional development opportunities are available for teachers in the organization that not only foster their personal development, but also translate into new opportunities for the students. One example of this is the Agriscience Teacher Ambassador program. In this program, a number of teachers are selected to attend an intensive week long training session on how to implement agriscience into their curriculum. Those teachers then travel throughout the country, visiting with their peers and spreading the word on how they too can incorporate the sciences into the classroom. Communication is key in the education industry, and the National FFA Organization offers a variety of tools to keep advisors and agricultural educators up-to-date with what is happening in the industry. One of the strongest communications venues is the educators workroom page at www.ffa.org. This page keeps teachers informed on events and activities on the national level as well as important changes in the industry. Teachers can log on to this site and find instruction tips, information on supervised agricultural experience programs (SAE), partnerships, marketing, professional growth and program planning. Another element of the website, myffa, allows teachers to gather even more information pertinent to them. Making A Difference (MaD) is a monthly communication tool for FFA advisors and agricultural education teachers to keep them up-to-date on what is occurring in the field and within the organization. This publication keeps teachers informed and is a great teaching tool. While websites and publications are wonderful methods of communication, they do not replace human contact. That’s where the Local Program Success team comes in. These individuals are available to answer questions and offer teacher resources in the agricultural education world. You may contact the LPS team at lps@ffa.org. Homepage: www.ffa.org |

Missouri Welding Institute, Inc. Missouri Welding Institute, Inc. began operation on October 3rd, 1994 with a class of six students. Since then, MWI has successfully trained over 1,800 students with an average of 95% job placement. Tom Hollands, the company owner and president, had 20 years of private welding school operational experience, having taught at three other welding schools before opening Missouri Welding Institute. Tom Hollands opened MWI to create an instructional environment with no boundaries where the students could excel to their highest levels. MWI’s program is a totally competency-based course where students advance at their own rate of speed. Students spend 35 hours per week in hands-on welding and fitting training, with the remaining five hours spent in the classroom learning pipe fitting, inspection terminology, x-ray interpretation, non-destructive testing methods, welding procedure specification interpretation, jobsite safety, blueprint reading, placement and trade math. When MWI opened its doors in 1994 our goal was to become THE PREMIER WELDING SCHOOL in the nation, which we believe has come to fruition. With the addition of the only stand-alone pipe fitting laboratory in the country, the BEST has gotten a little better. Missouri Welding Institute is dedicated to providing its students with a sound occupational education. We strive to enable students to develop the attitude, knowledge and skills necessary for them to be effective as a person, a family member and a citizen in an era of rapid social change. National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Company The NJATC was created in 1941 and has since developed into what has become known as the largest electrical apprenticeship and training program of its kind. Local IBEW/NECA Electrical JATC training centers, utilizing the NJATC training curriculums, have developed and trained hundreds of thousands of apprentices to Journeyman status with no cost to the taxpayers. This joint alliance between the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) has clearly demonstrated the most cost effective way to train qualified electrical craft workers. Currently, over 50,000 electrical apprentices are in training throughout the 300 IBEW/NECA Electrical JATC training centers in the U.S. and Canada. Each apprentice is required to successfully complete multiple years of classroom education along with multiple years of on-the-job training (OJT). In addition, an average of 70,000 Journeymen attend classes at the local Electrical JATC training centers each year to continually increase their knowledge and skills in the ever changing electrical industry. The apprenticeship and Journeyman training is extremely successful because the IBEW and NECA invest over $140 million annually into state-of-the-art training for their members. This easy-to-use interactive program contains pictures and identifying characteristics of 1,000 weed species that might be causing you problems in your managed or native landscape.
