The American Veterinary Medical Association

What is the AVMA?
Founded in 1863, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) is the largest nonprofit association for veterinarians in the world. Headquartered in Schaumburg, Ill., with a satellite office in the heart of Washington, D.C., the AVMA represents more than 75,000 veterinarians whose professional training prepares them to work in a variety of fields and with a variety of employers.

The Agricultural Connection
Students interested in agriculture and science will find that veterinary medicine presents countless opportunities to serve animals, people and the environment. For example, veterinarians play a critical role in monitoring the safety of the nation’s food supply from the farm — to the packing plant — to the kitchen table. They care for the health needs of animals on farms, ranches and feedlots and advise producers on the best approaches to production medicine. Through their work in governmental agencies, veterinarians help to manage diseases that pose threats to humans and animals and to protect the environment through research on pollutants and pesticides. It can be said that veterinarians utilize their skills to influence almost every aspect of daily life.

The AVMA has the resources and staff to assist you in promoting careers in veterinary medicine to your students. Visit our Web site, www.avma.org to learn more about the AVMA, veterinarians, and animal health.
