During the first session of the 1997 NVATA Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, NVATA President MeeCee Baker presented the report of the nominating committee. Duane Fisher was nominated for 1997-98 NVATA President. Paul Jaure and Tom Kremer were nominated for 1997-98 NVATA President Elect.

During the second session of the 1997 NVATA Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, by general consensus, nominations were closed and these individuals were placed officially in nomination for the respective offices: Duane Fisher for 1997-98 NVATA President; and Paul Jaure and Tom Kremer for 1997-98 NVATA President Elect.

During the third and final session of the 1997 NVATA Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, the following business was transacted.

President MeeCee Baker seated the official convention delegates and established the counts needed for majority and two-thirds majority votes. There were 160 official voting delegates present. For a majority, 81 votes would be needed; for a two-thirds majority, 107 votes would be needed.

MeeCee Baker appointed Mike Cox (VA) to be parliamentarian and Eddie Stephens (MO) to assist with this responsibility.

MeeCee Baker announced that the Committee of Tellers would be Ray Chelewski (ME), Gary Hill (OK), and Gerald Koverman (OH).

MeeCee Baker called for votes for president and president elect, respectively. The tellers were excused to count the votes.

Committee reports (copies attached) were presented as follows:

Finance - Chairperson Gary Hill (OK) presented the report, which was approved as presented.

Policy and Bylaws - Chairperson Doug Graham (MI) presented the report, which was approved as presented.
Diversity - Chairperson Woodie Pugh (AL) presented the report, which was approved as presented.

Public Relations - Chairperson David Twente (MO) presented the report, which was approved as presented.

Member Services - Chairperson Rex Hamner (WY) presented the report, which was approved as presented.

Legislative Affairs - Chairperson Lonnie Koepke (NE) presented the report, which was approved as presented.

Strategic Planning - Chairperson Ray Chelewski (ME) presented the report, which was approved as presented.

MeeCee Baker opened the floor for action on the proposed bylaws changes.

Bob Buxton (OH) moved to amend Article I of the NVATA Bylaws to change the name of the organization from the National Vocational Agricultural Teachers’ Association to the National Association of Agricultural Educators. The motion was seconded by Dave Marbot (NY). By show of voting cards of the official voting delegates, the ayes were 116; the nays were 32. The motion carried.

Ron Stahl (OK) moved to amend Article III Section 4 of the NAAE Bylaws to change the membership dues for organizational/business members from $175.00 per year to $500.00 per year. The motion was seconded by Elizabeth Morgan (ME). By show of voting cards of the official voting delegates, the ayes were 142; the nays were 1. The motion carried.

Elizabeth Morgan (ME) moved to amend Article IV Section 6 of the NAAE Bylaws to add the words “ the delegates” so that the section would read: “ officer failing to carry out their duties may be removed from office by a two-thirds majority vote of the delegates at any annual meeting.” The motion was seconded by Eddie Watkins (FL). By show of voting cards of the official delegates, the ayes were 144; the nays were 3. The motion carried.

MeeCee Baker opened the floor for other business.

Richard Watson (IL) moved to reconsider the previously passed motion regarding the bylaws amendment to change the name of the organization. The motion was seconded by Donn Randall (WY). President Baker verified that both Watson and Randall voted on the prevailing side of the first motion. By voice vote, President Baker declared the motion failed. Division of the house was called. By show of voting cards of the official voting delegates, the ayes were 57; the nays were 86. The motion failed.

MeeCee Baker announced the results of the vote for president. Duane Fisher was elected 1997-98 NAAE President.

MeeCee Baker announced the results of the vote for president elect. Tom Kremer was elected 1997-98 NAAE President Elect.

MeeCee Baker welcomed Duane Fisher, 1997-98 NAAE President, Tom Kremer, 1997-98 NAAE President Elect, James Dawley, 1997-2000 NAAE Region II Vice President, and Bryan Gause, 1997-2000 NAAE Region IV Vice President.

Marion Fletcher (AR) moved to adjourn. The motion was seconded by Jo Ellen Seaman (IL). The motion carried. NAAE President Duane Fisher declared the meeting adjourned at 2:20 p.m.
