NAAE is governed by a board of directors elected by the NAAE membership represented by official voting delegates at the annual NAAE convention. The board of directors consists of a president, president- elect, a vice president for each of NAAE's six regions, the immediate NAAE Past President, and the NAAE Chief Executive Officer, who is an ex-officio, non-voting member.
Committee chairs and secretaries are also important leaders in NAAE. Committee leaders are elected by the members of each respective committee.

Each NAAE region annually elects a regional secretary to assist the regional vice president. The six regional secretaries and important contributors to the NAAE leadership, but they are not members of the NAAE Board of Directors.
